There’s something grounding about walking through wooden alleys that have held centuries of stories, watching life unfold at a rhythm that feels almost untouched by time…
If you’re planning a trip to China, these towns are worth the detour. They’re not “hidden,” but they are the kind of places that remind you why travelling with curiosity makes all the difference.
Maybe because, for the first time in a long while, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer amount of visual and emotional information I absorbed.
Or maybe because a part of me wanted to keep these experiences just for myself a little longer.
So for now, here is a very small selection, a first glimpse into Beijing, a city where the past stands with a presence so strong it almost speaks.

📍 Forbidden City
– Plan at least half a day. It’s vast and full of layers you’d never expect.
– Hire a guide. There is simply too much history and symbolism to grasp on your own — you’ll appreciate everything so much more.
– Book tickets before you even leave for China. They sell out incredibly fast.
– Bring snacks. Yes, there’s a bar near the main entrance, but trust me… China is not Japan when it comes to snacks. Options are limited and not particularly exciting.
– Lunch: definitely outside the complex.
📍 Summer Palace
– A peaceful contrast to the intensity of the Forbidden City.
– Walk the Long Corridor, sail across Kunming Lake, and climb to the Tower of Buddhist Incense for breathtaking views.
– Go in the late afternoon if you can, the light is magic.
