Evening in Ine.
A few years ago, at the end of summer, I went to Ine, a fishing town in northern Kyoto. Along the bay stand houses called funaya, each with space for a boat on the ground floor. I was on the seawall, photographing the funaya in the evening sun, when a young man in sandals came toward me with a fishing rod.
He dropped his line into the sea close by, caught a fish in about five minutes, and headed home. The sight of him walking away has stayed with me. I had come to a harbor town to take photographs, and I felt small.

USETSU presets v2 is out.

I narrowed my Lightroom presets down to four, WABI, SHIORI, SABI, and KARUMI, and reworked the look of each. Since the first version, the goal has been a look you can keep using for years, one that does not depend on trends. These are the presets I use for my own work now.

The package includes XMP files for desktop, DNG files for mobile, and a manual in Japanese and English. Details and sample images for each preset are at the link in my profile.

After years of walking around Tokyo, I have come to remember the places where light falls. From the gaps between buildings of different heights, light sometimes falls on a single spot.
When I'm walking with my wife on a sunny day, even while we talk, I keep looking around. "Light is hitting that spot," I think, and I check my watch and remember the time. And then I return to that spot. It might be the next day. It might be the next year.
This light only appears in this season, at this hour. The height and angle of the buildings match the path of the sun for only a few days each year.
People's lives appear in the light.

On looking out the window.
Red roofs of western Japan.

Some time ago, I often traveled between Tokyo and Kyushu for work. I would take the Shinkansen west from Tokyo, past Kyoto, past Osaka, and further west.

Looking out the window, I noticed something after the train passed Okayama Station. Among the gray tile roofs of the old houses in the distance, some were red. The further west I went, the more red roofs I saw. It was a curious sight.

That sight stayed with me. In May 2024, I made time to travel through Okayama Prefecture.

Houses with red tile roofs were everywhere. The red roofs I had seen from a distance through the Shinkansen window turned out, up close, to come in many shades. Muted red, glossy red, vermilion.

I looked into it. The tiles are called Sekishu-gawara. They come from the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture, and the red comes from kimachi-ishi, a local stone used as a glaze material.

Fired at high temperatures, they are also resistant to cold and snow. What I had thought of as a color turned out to be tied to the local geology and climate.

Against the green of new leaves and rice fields, the red tile roofs remain in the eye. That contrast is part of what makes the landscape of the Chugoku region distinctive.

Traffic mirrors in Japan

If you travel in Japan, pay attention to the traffic mirrors.

“What should I do when I come to Japan?”

If a foreign friend asks me this, I think of standard answers first. Eating sushi, stopping by convenience stores, visiting shrines, soaking in hot springs. These are all essential experiences in Japan.

But I might add one more thing: “It’s interesting to look at the traffic mirrors on the street.”

Japanese traffic mirrors are unique because of where they are placed. At the entrance of residential areas, narrow T-junctions, sharp curves, and parking lot exits, you can find orange traffic mirrors everywhere. A huge number of mirrors are installed all over the country.

In shrines or old towns, some mirrors have wood-grain frames instead of orange. You can enjoy these small variations.

I think what is reflected in those mirrors is very “Japanese.” In Japan’s narrow streets, pedestrians, bicycles, and cars naturally mix. You can see fragments of daily life reflected there. The same life exists both inside and outside the mirror.

I don’t drive often, but when I am behind the wheel, I don’t trust these mirrors 100%. This is because they have blind spots and you can misjudge distances. I remember learning this at driving school, so I think this is a common understanding in Japan.

Still, these mirrors continue to be installed. Maybe it is because of the Japanese mindset of trying to avoid risk as much as possible.

If you have a chance to walk in Japan, please take a moment to look into a traffic mirror on the street. You will see a layered view of this country that is not in any travel guide.

15years, 15photos

It has been 15 years since I started taking photos. Looking back, I feel like I have spent much of my life living in uncertainty. I didn’t set out to become a photographer from the beginning. I just walked in directions that seemed interesting, and somehow I ended up here—just like the way I have always taken my photos.
Becoming a father feels like another leap into the unknown for me. But as long as I have the “eye” that photography has given me, I believe I can enjoy whatever changes come my way.
I wonder what kind of light I will be chasing in the next 15 years.

─
