The current (~1500+) village inhabitants originated from two Indo-Malayan fisherman who built the very first stilt houses back in the 18th century.
Traditionally, fishing was the main source of wealth for the villagers, however the recent tourism boom has transformed Ko Panyi into a busy lunch stop for tourists.
Staying overnight on the island allowed me to observe what life is like after all the tourists departed.
I watched kids playing football on a floating pitch, adults repairing their long tail boats, and families renovating their stilt homes with reinforced material.
During dawn, mainland boats brought supplies and fruits to the island while taking older kids back for schooling. Younger children go to the island school, and parents pray at the island mosque.
The peaceful alleyways are soon disrupted by the arrival of the first tour boats and the mood shifts from serenity to commerciality.
Without a doubt, tourism has greatly increased the villagers’ wealth. However their once-peaceful lives are now forever intertwined with the chaos of tourism.
There are few places left on Earth that maintain a traditional livelihood, unadulterated by technology and globalization.

Our team spent 4 days inside Son Doong, exploring a world few have ever seen. Here we are ascending towards the cave’s rainforest, our flashlights glowing like fireflies in the massive dark cavern.
Tiny human specks emerging from the darkness and rising above a thin veil of mist to reach a lush rainforest promising paradise - we had found the Garden of Eden and with it, the elusive spirit of boundless happiness.

My alarm sounds at 3am. After some internal debate, I drag myself out my cozy -5C rated sleeping bag and am rudely awakened by the 4C mountain air.
I look up and am surprised to see the Milky Way with my naked eye! After setting up my camera, I stand in silence, counting shooting stars, while my camera clicks away.
I look back at the sky and have an out-of-body experience. The stars are moving - no - the Earth is rotating! Watching the Milky Way always provokes existential questions - in this massive universe, the stars have twinkled for billions of years, and will continue to do so for another few billion years to come.
Our time on Earth is so short in the grand scheme of the universe - how fleeting our lives are. You can sit at home and embrace apathy, lace up your sneakers and embark on a lifelong rat race, or pursue your dreams to make your life count!
