Today, on the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, I find myself reflecting with a heavy heart and profound gratitude on the monumental courage displayed on the beaches of Normandy. On June 6, 1944, an entire generation of young men sailed toward a storm of steel and fire, driven by a conviction that some things are worth dying for. They fought not for glory, but for the future of the free world.

Having served in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other operations, I've seen firsthand the chaos of combat and the unique bond that forms when you place your life in the hands of the lads to your left and right. That experience, though worlds away from the shores of France, gives me a deeper, more personal understanding of the sacrifice made by the heroes of the Greatest Generation. The fear they must have felt, the bravery they summoned, and the devastating loss of their brothers-in-arms—it’s a reality that transcends time and connects all who have served. Their sacrifice was on a scale that is difficult to fully comprehend, and it secured the liberties we enjoy to this day.

It is our duty to ensure their stories are never forgotten. We must carry the memory of their valor forward, not just as a history lesson, but as a living reminder of the true cost of freedom. We owe them a debt that can never be repaid, but it is a debt we must strive to honour in our own lives.

Thinking of them standing shoulder-to-shoulder—a band of brothers facing down tyranny with the strength to put their best foot forward—I'm reminded of the statue of the three soldiers, forever united in their service. Their legacy is captured perfectly in this timeless promise:

**It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." - George S. Patton**

We will remember them.⚔️♦️🇫🇷🦁🇬🇧

Army Benevolent Fund ABF Frontline Walk
Today, 28 May 2026, marks 16 years since I was nearly killed in Nad-e-Ali, 41 West, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. On 28 May 2010, during a routine reconnaissance patrol, a Taliban sniper shot me in the neck. The bullet shattered my C5–C6 vertebrae and left me paralysed from the neck down. My teammate Chris was also shot — his femur was shattered and his femoral artery ruptured. A fourth member of our patrol ran between us and did everything he could to treat the wounded. That day some people went above and beyond; others simply watched. I am grateful we all came home, but a part of me stayed in Afghanistan.
Since then I have tried to move forward by supporting military and local charities — including the Army Benevolent Fund, Scotty’s Little Soldiers, Walking With The Wounded, Healing Military Minds, the NHS, Mind, Wings for Life, Cumbria Air Ambulance, Cash for Kids and The Youth Zone in Carlisle. At the heart of it, it’s just about helping people to the left and right, and I will keep doing my best.
If anyone else is struggling out there please remember that nothing should ever hold us back in life, things happen just to test us. Keep pushing forward, good things are coming and keep putting your best foot forward in everything.
I’m putting this down because it helps me to say it out loud — and maybe it helps someone else.

I spent 16 years with the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. A catastrophic injury in Afghanistan changed my life forever. For a long time I chased the person I used to be instead of learning to live as who I am now. That struggle was brutal, but I’m quieter about it these days — not because it’s gone, but because I’ve learned to live with it.

Four things I really struggled with:

1️⃣ Losing my sense of identity — not recognising myself after service and injury.

2️⃣ Anger, guilt and shame about what happened and what I couldn’t do anymore.

3️⃣ Isolation — feeling like no one really understood what I’d been through.

🧭 Losing my purpose and direction once the regiment life ended.

What’s helped and how I’ve grown:

1️⃣ Acceptance: admitting I’m different now was the first real step forward.

2️⃣ Small goals and routines — they rebuilt my confidence one day at a time.

3️⃣ Letting people in: talking honestly with mates, family and professionals stopped the isolation.

4️⃣ Finding new purpose: helping others, mentoring, or small projects gave me meaning again.

5️⃣ Patience and celebrating tiny wins — progress isn’t always dramatic, but it’s real.

6️⃣ Learning to be kinder to myself and to ask for help when I need it.

Recovery isn’t just physical. It’s messy, slow, personal and painful — and that’s okay. If any of this resonates, I honestly hope it helps others. For me, it is and always will be about the people to my left and right. ⚔️♦️🦁🇬🇧

What would have been the 100th birthday of our beloved late Queen Elizabeth II is forever remembered. Her unwavering service and dedication to our nation remain deeply cherished, and her absence is profoundly felt and missed.
We will never forget our Queen's legacy. 👑⚔️🇬🇧

Mark Harding thought he was just taking incoming fire, until the truth hit harder than the bullets 🚨

In this intense clip, Mark breaks down the moment he realised he’d been shot in combat, the confusion on the ground, and the split-second decisions made while under fire. As the situation spiralled, his focus wasn’t just on surviving, but on protecting his mate Chris, even as his own condition rapidly deteriorated.

From being pinned down and hit, to emergency treatment and an induced coma, this is the reality of modern warfare stripped of filters and bravado. This is what combat actually feels like when everything goes wrong.

🌟 January 2024 was a life-changing month for me. I met someone who just gets me—Lauren! 🎉 Our connection was instant, and she has filled my life with love, laughter, and cozy nights in.

Looking back on our journey over the past 10 years, I realised just how guarded I was with my feelings. But now, as we celebrate our second anniversary, I want to share this: if you love someone and cherish being with them, don’t hold back! Open your heart and let them know just how much they mean to you. ❤️

Lauren, I love you endlessly. You’re my rock, my best friend, and my partner in every adventure life throws at us. Here’s to growing old together, still laughing and joking like we always have! Love you to the edge of the universe and back, gorgeous! 💘💖💖
2025 taught me so much about rest, recovery, and what truly matters.

Last year, I took a step back to focus on my health and well-being after years of nonstop fundraising and challenges—especially after a van 🚐 reversed over me, leaving its mark. I’ve lost 4 stone so far and I’m committed to getting fitter and stronger for whatever comes next.

🏔️ Huge shoutout to Lauren and her friend Karen for taking on the massive Cateran Yomp and making it all the way to Silver! This was months of training and the girls raised over £1500 for the Army Benevolent Fund which was amazing. I was part of the support crew alongside Alan, Karen’s husband.

I had the honour of speaking for the Army Benevolent Fund at the Night to Remember event, where we raised an incredible £5,160 for the charity.

📚📖I’ve been invited to participate in a research project by an author, featuring a character based on a veteran with a back injury, who also ends up paralysed like me and miraculously manages to walk again.

🏆I was overwhelmed and humbled to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award at Pride of Cumbria for my work with the Army Benevolent Fund and Scotty’s Little Soldiers. It was a complete surprise and a reminder that our efforts are worthwhile in helping so many others, both locally and nationally.

🏘️🏠🏡This year, I sold my houses and started a new chapter with Lauren, who has genuinely transformed my life. I’m so grateful for her unwavering love and care, and for the support of my close family and friends—I wouldn’t be here without them ❤️.

After 13 years of prioritising fundraising, I finally took two holidays abroad. At first, I felt guilty, but stepping away helped recharge me and made me more ready for the future.

My simple takeaway: make time for yourself. You’ve only got one life—live, love, and enjoy it without regrets. I’m heading into 2026 fitter, stronger, and thankful for every hand that’s helped me along the way.

What will you do to take better care of yourself next year?
