Each work consists of two hollow ceramic pieces made from found tree branches and combined with an embroidery on a clothing label. With this new series, Droescher continues her research around the story of the stick in the human hand: from tool, to weapon, to magic wand, to sceptre, to walking stick in previous works.

Inspired by the ‘garden room’ fresco of Villa of Livia in Rome and developed during Birch’s residency at Domus Nostra, the work explores the tension between depth and surface. The title ‘Undergrowth’ hints at this complexity of layers, and suggests being caught within a simultaneously flat yet dense visual field of colour.
We look forward to Sophie Birch’s upcoming first solo exhibition with the gallery in London in October 2026.

The spaces they occupy operate as shifting conditions, assembled from fragments of ordinary life—or, more specifically, from that time-outside-of-time we might feel on holiday or on an idle and sunless Tuesday, when the rattle of our ordinary lives is briefly held in suspension and we are able to look at ourselves as though from elsewhere—so that nothing is held long enough to become fixed, and what remains is a quiet sense of having arrived somewhere already slipping into another place.” – Extract from essay accompanying the exhibition

‘Episode ’ brings together all the gallery artists alongside past and future residents of Domus Nostra for the first time under one roof, functioning as an introduction in Italy of the gallery programme with many of the included artists showing in Rome for the first time. The exhibition features works by Annabelle Agbo Godeau, Sophie Birch, Rike Droescher, Danielle Fretwell, Minami Kobayashi, Katinka Lampe, Gian Manik, Paul Robas, Rafal Topolewski, Miko Veldkamp and Ilaria Vinci.
This exhibition marks the first activation of the apartment space beyond its residency format launched in June 2025, and will remain on view until Saturday 30 May, 2026.

Apollo Painting School is a non-profit organisation founded in 2023 by artist Louise Giovanelli, gallerist & curator Alice Amati and artist & academic Dr. Ian Hartshorne with the aim to create an alternative model of teaching and unique learning opportunity for emerging UK-based painters. The course offers an intensive programme that takes place online and in-person between Manchester (UK) and Latina (IT).
