Most people come to Chernobyl just for a day trip. Eager to see the sarcophagus and snap a selfie in front of the famous ferris wheel, they rarely have time to visit other places on the outskirts of the Zone. One of these places is the ancient village of Krasno, seemingly lost in time amid the swampy forests. Shepherding this collection of ragtag wooden houses, the 200-year old oaken church of Archangel Michael stands tall on the hill, gracefully hiding the teeth marks of time.
The door was not locked - the whole concept of locks made redundant by the complete absence of any living souls in the vicinity. I was surprised to see a tidy and quaint interior - just a plain village church after all. But the object that caught my attention was an old chandelier hanging precariously over the nave. Blackened and eerily deformed, it looked like a giant spider writhing in agony, caught up in its own web. For some reason it stayed with me as a visual metaphor of the Chernobyl disaster - although its sorry state had nothing to do with radiation.
After taking this picture, I climbed through cobwebs up to the creaky belltower and rang the church bell. As its brassy call rolled over the marshlands, I felt with absolute certainty that no one was there to hear it - yet it still felt like the right thing to do somehow.

Cut off from water and power, it cast an unblinking blind-eye stare over the city through hundreds of boarded-up windows. At some point, Ponte seemed beyond salvation - suggestions were made to turn it into a prison (with its panopticon structure, it would have been the stuff of nightmares). In the 2000s, plans for renovation were delayed by red tape and the global financial crisis - again Ponte beared the signs of the times. Nowadays, Ponte City is once more fully functional, a home for hundreds of people and a symbol of hope in the City of Gold..
