On 11/11 our precious babies Nell and Beau arrived into the world.

It’s been a wild ride to get here… Constant rib pain, sickness, heartburn, carpal tunnel, many trips to the hospital. Renovating our house, washing up in the bath, living amongst the dust for months. All the while continuing to work right up until their birth.

37 weeks of excitement, worry, tears and joy.

Then suddenly they were here, so tiny and perfect.

The best thing I’ll ever make.
What a dreamy project making these hand built bowls for - I can’t wait to see them filled with the most delicious food…
Only a few weeks to go until my final collection of the year. After that I’ll be taking a very exciting break until summer next year.

This update will include lots of one off pieces, both functional and decorative, as well as a few samples and seconds. I’ll be subletting my studio after the sale so every shelf must be cleared…

As always, thank you so much for being here supporting my work. It’s been a very different year for me with very different goals, but I’m very proud of my little studio and can’t wait to show my two new assistants the joys of working with clay (though it might be a while before they’re rolling out clay for me 👶🏼👶🏼)
Baby and tall Float Mugs in tin white speckle…

I’ve been very quiet lately, but there’s been lots happening behind the scenes. Workshops, special projects, show prep, but mostly illness.

I had to take a little break from the studio (something I hate doing) and force myself to rest (another thing I hate doing).

But I’m finally back and playing catch up with my making. I promised a Float Mug update a while ago and they’re finally out of the kiln and ready for you. Quite a few found new homes during Open Studios and I just love the reactions when customers see them for the first time.

As they’re built by hand, people are often surprised by how light they are. Their generous handle is usually the next comment made ‘I love that I can really hug the mug with my hand…’ nothing worse than an uncomfortable mug handle.

But by far the most heard comment is that they’ve never seen a mug like it. Which is just about the best compliment I could hear.

If you’d like to own one make sure you’re signed up to my emails as I’ll be sending out a link for early access to my website this Sunday.

As always, and especially at the moment, numbers are limited so be quick 🤍

Hope you love them as much as I do
Process shots from an experimental Sunday…

My Core Collection will launch this month and after that you can expect updates of special limited collections every few months.

My aim is that you can visit my site and always see something you can purchase. Although it’s a lovely thing that my updates sell out so quickly, I’d love to give you the chance to deliberate between pieces, save for something special or treat someone for an occasion without worrying about it selling out.

The Core Collection will feature mostly my smaller most popular designs, timeless pieces I love to make. The idea is that if even if it’s currently sold out, it will be available again in the next couple of weeks.

This then allows me the breathing space to create new one off pieces, which will form my quarterly special updates.

The Core Collection will be available to shop in the next couple of weeks. Make sure you’re subscribed to my emails to hear more…
One thing you need if you’re going to start making ceramics is resilience…

The wall pieces I make span a 66cm diameter. They’re made from one solid slab of porcelain, painstakingly carved with hand built clay hangers attached. They look deceptively simple but they’re a huge test in how well I know my clay.

They have to be carved at exactly the right moment, quickly and carefully, so the clay doesn’t dry out. Dried slowly, rotated halfway through drying, compressed, compressed again, just keep compressing.

Weeks later they enter the first fire with a bed of sand beneath them to allow them to glide over the kiln shelf as they contract.

And sometimes, they still crack.

Deep breath…
One second and two firsts…

Thank you so much for all your orders in my annual Samples & Seconds sale. With ambitious hand building designs like the Float Mug, SO many things can go wrong (like the slightly wonky first mug) but I love that you all see the beauty in the imperfections.

All packages are being picked up from my studio today so they should be with you very soon…

Because of this routine clearing of my shelves, February always feels like the start of my year and I’m trying something a little different this time.

I’ve been working on narrowing down my ‘Core Collection’ - pieces I never tire of, that sit well together and feel timeless. The idea is that these pieces will be made and restocked on my website at least once a month, so that there’s always something available, and if it’s sold out you know there’s more coming soon.

There will then be less frequent special updates of experimental work and limited edition pieces.

I hope this new way of working will mean less disappointment for customers who miss out, but more than anything give me the time and space to develop the many ideas burning in my brain.

Lots of words this morning, but it feels good to write it down.
An XL drum fresh from the fire
Bisqued pots ready to glaze and final fire…

I’ve been smoothing out the issues I’ve had with this porcelain and so far every vessel is looking as good as I’d hoped ready for my final update.

Hand building with very smooth unforgiving clay can be a real challenge and so far my main lesson is that pieces need to be put together a lot sooner than I’d like.

It also likes to dry verrrrrry slowly, be fired on a slow cycle and don’t dare even think about touching it a lot after pieces have assembled.

It cracks, warps, sometimes develops random white spots and is generally a nightmare to handle… But then a perfect piece emerges from the kiln and I forgive it all.
I have lots of black clay rolled out and waiting to become something.

I’m imagining low carved drums, XL floor standing vessels and wall pieces.

But for now, Boo and I have a dog show to win (we’re going for ‘best rescue dog’) wish us luck…
