[ENG] I am again grateful to be part of “We, The People” calendar. This year’s selection is one of the photographs I took of Lundi, a Bayaka pygmy girl, during a hunting expedition. This is a very emotional photo for me, for I spent some of the most unforgettable weeks of my life living in the equatorial rainforest with these extraordinary people. Without knowing, they’ve taught me lessons far beyond anything I could’ve learned from books and academic life. Unfortunately, the Bayaka (as pretty much every other tribal and ethnic group in Africa) are endangered by mounting pressure from logging companies, conservationists, widespread poaching and more. For years, I have been supporting for the immeasurable work they do to protect them and the most neglected ethnic groups that are still lucky to be around. Every day they are active, is one more day that Lundi and her people get to live an preserve their environment and their dignity.
.

[ENG] Praying and meditation are an intrinsic part of life in Tibet. Whether you are in a monastery, in a city or in the intimacy of a home, you see Tibetans devoting significant parts of their days to contemplation and working with the mind. For me, they’ve always been a massive inspiration. I’ve been practicing meditation and studying Tibetan Buddhist philosophy for almost 30 years now, and I keep coming back to these images. They make me feel at ease and grounded. They remind me of the power that comes from discpline, commitment, perseverance, and devotion.

[ENG] While cycling across the rural areas of Yunnan Province, a region inhabited by many of China’s ethnic minorities, I came across this wooden shack surrounded by lush vegetation in Bulang territory. It must’ve been like 36 C and suffocating humidity so I needed to take a break. Not too long after I stopped, the grandmother of these siblings beckoned me to come in. The house with little openings was much cooler than outside and through the cracks the harsh sun filtered through to create this magical lighting. The kids wouldn’t stop running around me and as it is usually the case, the little one would copy everything his older brother do. Regardless, I spent a couple of hours with them, eating watermelon and chatting with their granny, who was as caring as my own.

[ENG] The Kingdom of Lesotho is in my opinion one of the treasures of Southern Africa. A speck of land raised at an average of 3000 m baasting some of the wildest terrains you could ever face on a bicycle. A land of lonely shepherds living in villages nestled in between the mountains. Along those endless days of pushing on rocky roads I came across these two little Basotho siblings on their donkey a few kilometres away from their village. They gave me a suspicious look as I sat on my bicycle catching my breath. The little one peeked from behind his elder brother’s back, as if seeking protection behind him. Their penetrating looks prevailed for a while until finally loosening up. They revealed the resilient character and tough spirit of the Basotho, who endure life in very harsh conditions.

[ENG] While I was living in China, I used to jumped at every opportunity I had to leave the architecture office, and go cycling across remote parts of the country. One of my projects took me to Xishuangbanna, where I rented a bike to set off to explore the tribal regions. Before departure, while I was out for food at the local market, I met these siblings from the Bulang ethnic minority. These images show a little bit of the behind the scenes and how it is usually not so straight forward to capture a beautiful portrait. It takes time, and patience until things align correctly. Especially when kids are involved. But it’s worth the wait:)

[ENG] In the next few posts I'll be sharing photos of siblings that I captured along my cycling journeys around the world. These are Pema and Tenzin. They were 8 and 10 years old respectively and grew up in a valley on the Tibetan Plateau at around 3800m high. Even at such early age, the harsh environment of Tibet has already been etched on their faces and hands. Regardless, they would run around like crazy, laughing and playing before settling for this portrait. The love they showed for each other truly moved me.

[ENG] The southern edge of the Congo is radically different from the images I had in my mind of green lush rainforests, tropical rain and wildlife. That exists too and I would be there eventually, but not during my first week in the country. The south is dry, hot and dusty. I spent the whole week breathing on red dust, which I had been doing since northern Angola. The sweat made it stick permanently to my face and body like make-up. But no matter how hard it was, I was there by choice. I was there because I was lucky to be in a position in which I can pursue my dreams. That is not the case for most people in this world. I ran into these guys in a small forgotten town. They do tough jobs in horrible conditions every day of their lives. They don’t do them to make ends meet, they do it to survive another day, and yet, at the end of the day, they still manage to smile. If they can, how could I ever complain about dust and heat? Then, I could only smile too.

I love this photo and I know many of you too. It is one of my favourites and I posted it before without a story. It became a symbol of an aspect of mine. I took it during some pretty insane jungle stretch between Gabon and Congo. I don't feel any special for enduring such intense challenges, anyone who truly wants it, can do the same. However, what I do appreciate is going all the way for the things that I love. More often than not, I get deep deep deep in the shit but just because when I choose to do something, I don't go half-way. Only when I know I've given everything of me, I can find peace of mind, regardless of succeeding or losing in the end. Because it's not about the outcome, it's about giving everything you have for what you truly love. To a great extent, the outcome is somehow secondary. It is the experiences that you do not want to miss in your life what truly matter. This is what I systematically apply to all aspects of life: travel, work, relationships, etc Sometimes you win, sometimes you do not, but ultimately, losing would be not having dared and given everything. I come back to this photo every time I need to be reminded of this.

With headwinds of over 45 kph and gusts much faster than that, cycling the Sahara from south to north was a mostly miserable experience. It'd take me 14 gruesome hours during day and night to cycle 55 km every day. Moving at 3-4 kph, swallowing sand and feeling every muscle hurt while struggling not to fall off the bicycle, (and that was when I was actually able to cycle at all). A nightmare that lasted ~40 days, and that's not including the 300 km I had to do on a truck, at a point where I could literally stand on the bicycle without being able to move it at all. I could sometimes just hopelessly sit next to the road in absolute solitude and simply felt like crying. Such is the grinding demoralising power of the wind..
