Rocky is living up to his namesake!! The movie Rocky is an iconic underdog story, Rocky Balboa gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to fight a champion. The film follows Rocky’s journey, ups and downs to the famous fight. He wins beat badly but wins.
In our Rocky’s case he is the classic underdog, a critically ill reservation mustang who has a once in his little lifetime a chance at life! He, like his namesake has been in it to win it. I don’t think I’ve had a foal fight so hard!!!
This has not come easy for us but you all supported him along the way. For two weeks he has received the best medical care money can buy. A gift rarely afforded these tribal mustangs. It has kept us going and also been a challenge financially for a small rescue like ours. But you all lifted us up with your kindness and donations. We are grateful 💖✨💝

He now weighs 100 pounds!!! 🎉 🥳💪🏾 he’s literally gained 10 pounds since he started nursing on Sunday!
He continues to sleep, nurse, try a little hay, repeat. He’s definitely making up for lost time.
We’re hopeful they can go home by the weekend! He’s out of the critical stage but still fragile. We want him solid before leaving the hospital.
Sweet Duchess has spiked a fever, so she’s being treated and watched closely. She’s a precious gift so of course we want her recovery to go well too 💖✨💝
And of course we’re still fundraising to help cover Rocky’s extensive vet bill!

We have hundreds of new followers and we’ve been trying to keep up with all the questions!!! Whew’ y’all love this little fighter so much.
For all our new followers and Rocky fans, here’s his story.
On the afternoon of 5-13-2026 we received a message from asking if we could take in an orphan foal.
We were told it was rejected from the mom. We had just raised money to replenish our orphan fund and had the space so we said yes!
When we picked him up it was obvious he was in bad shape and needed medical intervention immediately, so we rushed him to Bend Equine Medical Center.
He was triaged immediately and started on fluids, blood test run and assessed.
The assessment showed he was very, very ill, had 6 broken ribs and pneumonia for starters, this is why his sides are shaved- ultrasound was used to see what was going on inside. He was malnourished and needed plasma immediately. From there a feeding tube was placed (this is the bandaging you see around his face- his mouth is not taped shut) and food was given in small amounts via the feeding tube every two hours so to not stress his already delicate GI tract further. It was touch and go for days. Then he broke with diarrhea!
By now we had exhausted all of our funds ($14,000) but we could not stop, he wanted to live and was trying so hard we just could not give up on him! So we went to our followers to help and it allowed us to keep going. (Once we get the bill, as of the weekend we will give you all a full accounting of money in and money spent.)
After about ten days he started to get up in his own and even get a little sassy, but he still needed the critical medical care he had been receiving. So we stayed the course and continued to seek donor funds to help pay for his care.
Then something happened no one saw coming, a mare lost her foal 😭and the family reached out to us inquiring if surrogacy could be an option? We consulted with Dr Greer and she thought we could try!!!
So Sunday on the eleventh day of hospitalization Rocky got a mommy and Duchess got a baby 💖✨💝.
They are both still in the hospital under observation 💸💸💸
They are both doing well together. Rocky is nursing and sleeping….nursing and sleeping but also learning how to be a baby horse by mimicking his mamma. She dotes over him, always nosing him to make sure he’s close. It’s the cutest thing 💝✨💖

Last Thursday, Duchess a 7yo Paint and her newborn foal arrived at the hospital. I was there visiting Rocky, and after a brief conversation with Marisa, Duchess’s guardian about Rocky and her new baby, I headed home.
On Friday, my heart sank when we received an email sharing that Duchess had lost her baby. The family was overwhelmed with grief, and I found myself crying alongside them. My heart broke for them, especially Duchess 💔❤️❤️🩹
What happened next, however, was truly extraordinary. The family reached out and suggested that Duchess might become a surrogate mother for Rocky, hoping that caring for him might help heal her broken heart. This was Duchess’s first foal, and despite their own loss, the family wanted something good to come from the tragedy.
There is nothing more healing for an orphan than a mother, and this was a dream come true for Rocky.
After consulting with Dr. Greer to ensure Rocky was stable enough to attempt a graft, we spent Saturday preparing him.
At noon on Sunday, Duchess’s family and the 3 Sisters team met at. With high hopes and nerves, we watched the veterinary team begin the introduction. As the two met, Duchess let out a low, throaty nicker of acceptance. Though Rocky was initially unsure, with Dr. Greer’s help, he eventually latched on and nursed until he was full.
We are incredibly grateful to Marisa and her family for reaching out to us. This is a beautiful example of how even in the face of loss, there is an opportunity for healing and new beginnings. We hope Duchess’s heart will heal too with new her little 💖✨💝
