Joong Boo Market in Schaumburg has been on my radar since they opened last November. K Cafe and Eats is their Korean street food spot inside the food court. Fried chicken, noodle bowls, and a mango bingsu that genuinely takes a couple of people to finish. Solid food, casual setting, and a good reason to make the trip out to Schaumburg.

A gas station was the last place I expected to find wings worth talking about. Woodie’s Wings in Wheeling is the quick service spin-off of Woodie’s Flat in Chicago - smoked, double fried, and loaded with creative flavors. I was hosted to try their wings and the Sriracha soy alone made the trip worth it. Their wing of the month, hot Cheetos, was a fun twist too. This one caught me off guard in the best way.

La Dō in Northbrook is doing sourdough deep dish out of a suburban office complex and it’s one of those hidden gems you’d never stumble upon unless someone pointed you in the right direction. Their menu has some solid options. The Chicago Way with Italian beef and giardiniera, a veggie special, and many others. I added a sourdough cookie to my order too. The sourdough crust is excellent and they’ve clearly got the recipe dialed in. Worth seeking out.

Fry the Coop is a staple for chicken in the Chicagoland area. Known for their chicken sandwiches and tenders, they recently added beef tallow wings to the menu. The beef tallow gives them a distinct depth of flavor you won’t find at most wing spots. They do lean on the drier side, but the coop sauce or ranch takes care of that. Worth adding to your order next time you stop in.

Da Local Boy has been one of my favorite spots in the Chicagoland area for a while now, and I genuinely get excited every time I go. Hawaiian cuisine done with real care and real flavor - you can taste the effort in every single bite. The fact that they just opened a second location in the Chicago Loop means more people get to experience what I’ve been raving about. Critics and foodies are catching on, and honestly, they deserve every bit of it. If you haven’t been, make it a priority.

Te’amo and Lao Sze Chuan sharing a space in Evanston is a combo I didn’t know I needed. Started with some drinks - mango matcha with boba, mango lemonade, and a Dalgona coffee with boba.
Then made our way to Lao Sze Chuan for the food. Tony’s three chili chicken has this nice honey coating with a little heat that makes it a classic for a reason. The sole fish with black bean sauce is exactly what it sounds like - it’s one of my favorite flavor profiles on any menu. And the dry hot pot was a first for me. All that cumin - won’t be my last time ordering it. #invited

Mirra is Indian and Mexican fusion and Chefs Rishi and Zubair are pulling it off beautifully. The menu is thoughtful, the atmosphere is warm and put together - casual enough to be comfortable, nice enough for a date night. Been a fan of what Zubair has been building in this city and Mirra feels like the full picture coming together.

Mendocino Farms is a California-based chain that recently expanded to Chicago. This Vernon Hills spot is their first suburban location, and I got a chance to stop in right before the grand opening. Solid sandwich and salad selection - the chimichurri steak and the Thai mango salad were the moves.

Downtown Arlington Heights is a great spot to explore if you haven’t been, and is right in the mix. Cozy decor, packed with locals all night, and a menu that actually goes beyond the basics. Lemongrass, kaffir leaves, real Thai technique. They clearly care about the craft.

Gao’s BBQ and Crab in Chinatown does something unexpected: Northern Chinese skewers and Louisiana seafood boils on the same menu. The lamb and Wagyu are grilled perfectly, seasoned with cumin that actually elevates the meat. The seafood boil arrives drenched in garlic butter -lobster tail, snow crab legs, potatoes, corn, boiled eggs. Two completely different culinary worlds sitting on one table. The packed room, the energy - this is the kind of spot that reminds you why Chinatown keeps evolving.
