After I shared my experience in Bahrain, so many people responded with kindness and asked how they could help. That support gave me the courage to create this campaign.
Months without pay, housing uncertainty, and struggling to afford basic necessities took a serious emotional and physical toll. I lost weight and lived under constant stress. Leaving Bahrain didn’t erase that trauma or its financial consequences. I’m still working to regain stability and a sense of security.
I’ve done everything I can to keep myself afloat, including selling many records and rare posters from my personal collection that has been difficult, but I needed to cover everyday expenses. DJ bookings are coming in, and I’m pursuing more work, but despite these efforts, I can’t cover my immediate needs on my own.
I have to move by the end of October, and I’m raising €4,250 to help cover:
* €1,500 toward securing housing
* €750 to move my belongings
* €2,000 for outstanding bills and essential financial obligations
This support would help me secure a home, address overdue obligations, and continue rebuilding.
Some of you may remember supporting a similar fundraiser five and a half years ago, during the early years of the pandemic, to help me move and get back on my feet. I remain deeply grateful, and I don’t take asking again lightly. I’ve continued working and building my career, but my experience in Bahrain has brought me to another difficult point.
For over 30 years, I’ve dedicated my life to music, as a DJ, historian, curator, educator, and founder of 180 Proof Records. As a thank-you, I’d love to create an exclusive DJ Amir mixtape especially for those supporting this campaign, made with care and gratitude.

In July 2024, I left Berlin for Bahrain to be the Resident DJ and Talent Booker at a new vinyl venue. My contract covered salary, housing and travel. I turned down other opportunities and spent everything to relocate. The opening was repeatedly delayed, and I went months without pay.
The venue hadn’t opened, but I was ready to work. Under Bahrain’s labor law, the delay alone didn’t erase my right to be paid.
I had to keep asking the owners for money just to get by. It felt like I was begging. Then I was told to pay it back, though that wasn’t in my contract. I had to stay with one of the owners until I was asked to move out. I was told the move would be covered. Those costs were deducted when wages finally came. I barely had enough for food and water and I lost a lot of weight.
I wasn’t asking for charity. I wanted my contract honored. I took my case to Bahrain’s Ministry of Labor and then to court. I submitted evidence and won, but was awarded a minuscule fraction of what I was actually owed. The judgement speaks for itself, but it can’t capture what I went through.
When I left Bahrain with 10 suitcases, I cried as we crossed its airspace. I felt I’d lost 14 months of my life, my sanity, and, for a while, my faith in people.
I’m still here, doing my damn best to rebuild. Since returning, I’ve kept working, from BBE Music’s 30th anniversary to spinning The Black Keys after shows. I’m proud of that, but I need more opportunities to get back on my feet.
For nearly three decades, music has been my life, from Fat Beats and Kon & Amir to 180 Proof Records and Strata Records.
