What is an impression on social media?

Quick answer

An impression is one instance of content being shown on a screen, whether or not anyone engages. It counts views, not unique people, so one person can generate several. It measures exposure, not whether anyone cared.

My reports show impressions and reach as different numbers. What is an impression on social media?

An impression is one display of your content on a screen, engaged with or not. It counts views, not people, so one person can rack up several.

Reach is unique people, impressions is total times shown. Impressions over reach tells you how many times the average person saw it.

Impressions are raw exposure, nothing more. A million of them with no clicks or sales is a million missed chances, so judge by what followed.

An impression is a single instance of your content appearing on a screen. Every time a post is displayed, that is one impression, whether the person stops, reads, likes or just scrolls straight past. Crucially it counts displays, not people, so if one user sees your post three times as they scroll back and forth, that is three impressions from one person. That is the difference from reach, which counts unique people: reach is how many saw it, impressions is how many times it was shown.

Impressions measure exposure and frequency, useful for understanding how much your content is being served and whether people are seeing it repeatedly. But they are a top-of-the-funnel number that says nothing about quality. A million impressions with no clicks, saves or sales is a million chances that went nowhere. Treat impressions as the raw opportunity count, then judge the campaign on what people actually did with that exposure, engagement, clicks and conversions.

Impression counts are easy to inflate with bots and bought audiences, so the number only means something if the views are from real people. Flinque shows the genuine audience behind a creator, so the impressions you are paying for represent real potential customers rather than padding.
